Chapter 22 – Luke

Luke stood in the dining room of Mia and Michael’s home stunned at what she’d just told him. Obsessively, he thought back on all their conversations in the past few weeks. He didn’t understand. Had he done something wrong? Said something wrong? Not to her, surely. He made sure that when he and Mia were together, he was a gentleman. He made sure that she felt safe and comfortable around him. He and Mia had been having fun. He wanted it to seem like old times between the two of them so that she would fall in love with him once more.

He had gotten her to open up to him. Hadn’t she told him how unhappy she was that Michael was never around? Hadn’t she said that at times she wished her life had turned out differently? Was she falling in love with him again? Luke had made sure that when Michael was around, he touched Mia as much as possible, to make him jealous. He thought it was a stroke of genius the other night pulling Mia onto his shoulder while they were watching a movie when he’d heard Michael’s car pull into the garage. But Mia had told him to go and he didn’t know what had happened between them.

Maybe his plan had worked, maybe she had and now she was running away because she was scared. She was scared of hurting someone, especially Michael. Luke could care less if that asshole got hurt, as long as he had Mia back. He wondered what had happened yesterday that had made her change her mind about being in each others’ lives. It had been Thanksgiving so Mia would have been with her family…oh yes, that must be it. She’d told her mother. Mia’s mother had always been protective of her and when he’d screwed up she’d been the one to keep him away from Mia when they were younger. He could just imagine how that conversation between the two of them must have gone.

Before he was aware what he was doing, Luke went to the coolers and grabbed a beer. Leaving his food on the table, he went out to the backyard, into the cold, and chugged it down. He went back inside and grabbed three more, chugging them all outside before crushing the cans as the weight of what had just transpired hit him like a ton of bricks.

Mia didn’t want to spend time with him anymore. How was he supposed to win her back if they weren’t going to be around each other? He knew Mia, knew that once she finally did marry, no matter how she felt about him, she’d never leave Michael. Well then, he still had some time to try to convince her that they were meant to be together.

With the beer flowing through his veins, he felt steadier. He went back inside and took a fifth and six beers and chugged those as well. Then, he pulled out a small joint from his pocket and lit up.
